What can Governments do to Reduce Local Vulnerability?
2 jun 18:00 - 19:30
TheCase of Drought Management in Nicaragua
Nicaraguais a country hit by many natural disasters. Drought is one of them, one that furthermore has increased in bothfrequency and intensity since the beginning of the 1970s. The poor rural population uses differenttypes of strategies, both to cope with a current crisis and to adapt to an,over time, increasingly drier climate. Migration to other countries, sales of animals, change of income sourcesand employment, and a changed and reduced food intake can all be found withinNicaragua’s "dry zone". Butwhat does the government at local and national level do? The seminar gives an introduction to institutionalefforts to reduce drought vulnerability and what kind of implications that hasfor local survival in a drought affected area in central Nicaragua.
